What Is tokenization?

Simply put — tokenization is a fraud-prevention measure designed to protect sensitive payment credentials, such as:

  • Credit card numbers
  • Cardholder names
  • Expiration dates
  • CVV codes
  • Bank account numbers

Your payment card information, such as the 16-digit account number found on the front of the card, will be replaced with a digital account number that can be securely stored on your devices and used to make purchases. Your debit card number is NOT stored on the device, or on your phone/tablet servers. This helps to reduce the potential for fraud.

The process is invisible to customers and happens behind the scenes. It also helps to simplify checkout by eliminating the need to enter and re-enter your account number when buying items in mobile applications “in-app” or at the point-of-sale.

How will this keep my information more secure?

By using a digital account number, you no longer need to share your personal account information when you shop, which reduces the threat of your sensitive data being stored or compromised because only the digital account number is passed on and your payment details are never actually shared with a merchant. In addition, if your device is ever lost or stolen, you will not need to cancel your underlying card, only the digital account number which can be quickly reissued.

Doesn't the chip do the same thing?

Yes, it sure does! But here are the added benefits to tokenization:

  • Online Purchases (Most major retailers are ready to accept your wallet)
When you use your wallet for online shopping, your card number is NEVER provided to the merchant, and cannot be intercepted or stolen by criminals!
  • In Person
Using “Tap and Go” means your card stays in your wallet! Sadly, skimming is still a favorite method of stealing your card details. Even if the Chip purchase is tokenized/encrypted, that mag stripe can still be read and stolen if there is a skimmer installed on the terminal.
